We have decided to start focusing on Mariam Kartikatresni again. The legendary narcissist and dragon lady terrorized TBI for years, causing dozens upon dozens of subordinates to quit TBI over the years. This was a woman who would forget to give people targets or guidelines and then fly into a narcissistic rage when things didn’t happen on time and blew up in her face. One insider described working for her in the following terms: “It was a nightmare of internal politics. I moved to Head Office from Bandung to work for her but in the end I just couldn’t stand it. I resigned rather than put up with any more of the petty fighting and politics.”
One former TBI wit dubbed her time in charge at TBI as ‘The Reign of Error’ and confirmed that the company had started to go downhill the moment she took over. Before she was in charge, all school managers had been expats and the company had enjoyed a good reputation, but she was drawn ever more under the influence of two despicable and dishonest expats called Ashley Platts and Luke Preece, who schemed for their own advantage and forced out many competent people who had achieved good results. Mariam- she insisted on being called by the honorific term Ibu Mariam- was very much a product of the New Order mentality of the Suharto regime. Authoritarian and domineering, she insisted that she be treated with grovelling subservience by most of her staff. When things went wrong under her erratic and undisciplined management style, it was always someone else’s fault, and numerous people were fired as scapegoats for her own comic incompetence.
One of the ways she tried to divert attention from her own failures after this blog started was to litter the internet with numerous websites in her own name. The quality of these was generally every bit as atrocious as her management style. We would like to draw attention to one of her education blogs, which is as good any indication as any of her half-arsed work ethic. The sum total of her ‘productivity’ on this blog was nine words in 2013. The name of the blog is ‘Study Overseas for Indonesians’. She managed a single post of nine words length and then never added to it again. The single sentence was, “What does it mean to have an international education?”
Evidently, it means next to nothing to have an international education in Mariam’s case. She asked the question and never posted an answer. There are no further posts and zero comments on the blog. She wrote one question and then called it quits. This was as good an introduction as any to the world and work ethic of this abysmal education ‘manager’. In fact, that’s what counts as a hard day’s work when she is around.
