TBI Bekasi 2012 Monthly Finances Reviewed

In January TBI Bekasi made Rp 197.000.000 in sales. Binsar declared Rp 135.000.000 of these sales as TBI sales on his income sheet and the other Rp 62.000.000 was not marked as TBI sales. The best month of the year for Binsar by a wide margin was January 2012; this is an indication of how much his business has slid downhill in 2012. (These figures are rounded to the nearest million.)

In February TBI Bekasi made Rp 126.000.000 in sales. Binsar declared Rp 100.000.000 of these sales as TBI sales on his income sheet and the other Rp 26.000.000 was not marked as TBI sales.
Sales had massively dropped in the space of a single month. Why? We have no idea.

In March TBI Bekasi made a miserable Rp 100.000.000 in sales. Binsar declared Rp 75.000.000 of these sales as TBI sales on his income sheet and the other Rp 25.000.000 was not marked as TBI sales. This low level of sales indicates a school with no more than around 150 students on the books. This figure is about the same as the TBI informant’s estimate.

In April TBI Bekasi made Rp 136.000.000 in sales. Binsar declared Rp 98.000.000 of these sales as TBI sales on his income sheet and the other Rp 38.000.000 was not marked as TBI sales.

In May TBI Bekasi made a lousy Rp 110.000.000 in sales. Binsar declared Rp 96.000.000 of these sales as TBI sales on his income sheet and kept Rp. 14.000.000 for himself.

Over the next three months- June, July and August- Binsar declared all of his income on the income sheet as TBI income. This marked a departure from the January-May period where a sizable percentage of all income was not marked as TBI, meaning that he would not have pay royalties on it. June was another rotten month for TBI Bekasi, with the school raking in a piddling Rp 106.000.000, but July was much better. This corresponds with the peak student intake period: in July he took Rp 158.000.000, give or take a few rupiah between friends. But by August the underlying sickliness of revenue was again evident, with the school only receiving Rp 113.000.000.

From September to November, Binsar returned to his old tricks and started removing a large percentage of revenue off the books again. This would enable him to avoid paying royalties to TBI Head Office. During this period he had massively increased fees, so he was trying to make a lot more money from his remaining students. Increasing prices mid-year is a TBI no-no (in theory) but so (in theory) is rigging school manager appointments and sexual harassment, and it goes on all the time.

In September TBI Bekasi made Rp 148.000.000 in sales. Binsar declared Rp 134.000.000 of these sales as TBI sales on his income sheet and the other Rp 14.000.000 was not marked as TBI sales.

In October TBI Bekasi made Rp 151.000.000 in sales. Binsar declared Rp 113.000.000 of these sales as TBI sales on his income sheet and the other Rp 38.000.000 was not marked as TBI sales. At this point Binsar sharply ramped up the off-the-book accounting again.

Finally in November TBI Bekasi made Rp 139.000.000 in sales. Binsar declared a mere Rp 89.000.000 of these sales as TBI sales on his income sheet and the other Rp 40.000.000 was not marked as TBI sales.

We do not have the figures for December 2012, as it was obtained during that month before sales were finalized, but December is usually the quietest month at TBI schools, so it wouldn’t have contributed greatly to revenue. In total Binsar removed Rp 257.000.000 out of TBI sales (of course all sales within the school should be TBI sales) and filed them in a different column. Presumably his Finance Officer was in on the scam, as Binsar’s computer skills have been reported as near non-existant and it seems unlikely he prepared this income statement himself. This means that Binsar under-declared around $26,770 of income in 2012, showing that he is making a nice little bundle on the side, even as TBI Bekasi slowly sinks.
